7 Australian Popular Culture and Media Studies
The Olympic Games have often been a trigger for politicized posturings and the rewriting of history. The Sydney 2000 Games was a cauldron for a re-evaluation of the primary cultural tropes of nation, gender, race, class and culture. The popular cultural and media debates of the year flowed through this cultural watershed, weathering the discussions of new media, sport, journalism and politics. Therefore, considered attention is placed on context, history and media citizenship. This chapter is has eight sections: 1. University Knowledges; 2. Multiculturalism and Cultural Policy; 3.Indigenous Media Spheres; 4. Multiliteracies; 5. Screen Culture; 6. New Media; 7. Fame Games; 8. Sport and Politics.
